How to choose the density of geotextile
In this article we will talk about the choice of geotextile density in different applications. But first let's remember what is geotextile?
Geotextile is a strong and durable material made of polyester, polyester or polypropylene fibers. Although it resembles fabric, geotextile is a non–woven material. Geotextiles are made from threads. They can be either short or continuous. The fibers can be soldered or pressed together, depending on the type of geotextile.
Let's return to the calculation of geotextile density. Density is the main feature of the material. Thickness, elasticity, strength and water permeability depend on it. The higher the density, the slower the material passes water, but the stronger it will be.
The density of the material is chosen based on the scope of application. The minimum density of geotextile is 80g/m2, and the maximum is over 500g/m2. So which density should I choose?
- 80-150 g/m2 – geotextile of such density is perfect for landscape design, decorative reservoirs, for protection from weeds, arrangement of garden paths.
- 150-200 g/m2 – geotextile is already suitable for industrial construction. Namely for: foundations (low-rise buildings), drainage, protection of waterproofing materials, paving slabs.
- 200-250 g/m2 – this geotextile is suitable for foundations, arrangement of parking areas for passenger cars, highways, large reservoirs.
- 250-300 g/m2– suitable for parking lots and truck stops, highways.
- from 350 g / m2 – used in the construction of highways, runways, railways.
Using the hint above, it is not difficult to choose the desired geotextile density.
