How to choose a grade of stainless steel for handrails?

We all know and have once encountered such a material as "stainless steel", and, it would seem, a universal material suitable for different purposes.

But "stainless steel" can be different, let's get to know this material closer in this article.

Stainless steel is a corrosion–resistant material that has in its composition from 11.5% to 20% chromium. The amount of chromium is responsible for corrosion resistance, the more chromium in the composition, the greater the resistance.

The brand of stainless steel for handrails should be chosen based on where they will be used.

If you want to install handrails in a heated room with normal relative humidity, then you should choose handrails with AISI201 stainless steel.

AISI201 grade is stainless steel with an optimal composition – at least 14.5% chromium. It has excellent performance characteristics and resistance to acids and other chemical compounds.

If the handrails will be installed outdoors or in rooms with high humidity, then you should choose the AISI304 steel grade.

AISI304 stainless steel has at least 18% chromium and 8% nickel in its composition, which ensures the presence of an oxide layer on the metal surface and makes it resistant to acid–containing solutions and elevated temperatures.

There are also AISI201 and AISI304 stainless steel handrails in an ABS plastic shell, then they can be installed in rooms with high humidity, such as bathrooms, showers and toilets, since plastic provides additional protection and durability of products.

Why can stainless steel rust?

With a lack of alloying components, that is, chromium and nickel, an oxide layer is not formed, which protects the metal from corrosion – respectively, the ingress of water and aggressive substances can lead to the destruction of the metal.

Corrosion can also occur when the product is improperly welded, in which part of the iron remains around the seam and can rust.

In order for stainless steel handrails to serve you for a long time and be in good condition, choose a steel grade that meets your requirements and operating conditions.
