Geotextile for the construction of reservoirs

Geotextile is a woven or non—woven fabric made of polypropylene and/or polyester yarns. This material has become a modern solution to many problems related to drainage, filtration, separation and protection in the construction of roads, playgrounds, foundations, green roofs and the construction of artificial reservoirs.

Geotextile is a unique material of its kind, which has a number of advantageous characteristics, due to which it is widely used in construction and national economy. Geotextile is resistant to chemical attack, low temperatures, heavy loads and vibration. Geotextile is not subject to rotting and root germination.

Geotextiles are used in the construction of hydraulic structures such as swimming pools, ponds, artificial beaches, etc. Such facilities are built in different ways: some have a concrete bowl, others are separated by a film from the ground. But regardless of this, the reservoir must have high-quality protection against water leaks.
Therefore, any reservoir needs high-quality waterproofing and drainage system.

The leakage of water from the reservoir into the ground is fraught with the gradual withdrawal of water from it and flooding of the land plot.

In the drainage system of reservoirs, geotextile acts as a protective layer of the insulating layer of the bottom of the reservoir. Needle-punched geotextile is used for drainage of reservoirs. This is a non-woven fabric that is made by needle punching from spatula polyester fibers. Needle—punched geotextile has a high filtration ability - it traps fine particles and allows water to pass through. In addition, which is quite important, geotextile does not rot and does not allow roots to grow through itself.

The installation of geotextiles in the drainage system of the reservoir will depend on the type of soil. So, it is laid on the bottom of the reservoir, then a layer of waterproofing is placed on top. It is also possible to lay geotextiles on top of the waterproofing layer. It will be even better if the waterproofing is protected with a layer of geotextile on both sides. This option will be the most reliable in case of unforeseen situations.

The construction of the reservoir begins with a study of the depth of the groundwater location. If the groundwater is located above 2 meters, the drainage device around it is mandatory. If this is not done, then the desired pond will turn into a swamp. Then they start digging a pit, at the bottom of which they make a sandy base (its thickness should be about 10 cm). It is tamped down and the geotextile is laid. Geotextile is easily cut into pieces of the desired size, which are stacked with an overlap of 15 cm. After that, waterproofing is laid, for example, a geomembrane. And only then you can safely pour water. The edges of the film are bent and covered with soil.

The use of geotextiles in the construction of reservoirs will provide reliable waterproofing protection, as well as prevent water blooming and the formation of fungus. Geotextile retains its properties in all weather conditions.

Advantages of using geotextiles:

  • Reliability and durability of service
  • Easy installation and labor saving
  • Reducing the material consumption of structures;
  • Solving the most difficult tasks in the conditions of construction in wetlands, permafrost, etc.
