How does a water seal work?
A water lock in a shower trap (or drain trap) is a device that helps prevent odors and gases from the sewer system from entering the bathroom. This is done due to the principle of operation of the hydraulic lock.
1. Inner chamber:
- The hydraulic seal has an internal chamber filled with water or other liquid. This liquid creates a barrier that blocks the way for odors and gases from the sewer system. When gases from the sewer try to pass through the ladder, they collide with liquid and cannot enter the bathroom.
2. Tightness:
- A water seal is usually equipped with a valve or shut-off device that prevents liquids and odors from escaping back into the bathroom. This device opens only to drain water when the shower or bathtub is in use, and closes automatically after use.
3. Filling in:
- Under normal conditions, the liquid level inside the hydraulic seal remains constant. It may lose a small amount of water due to evaporation or overflow, but usually this does not significantly affect its functionality. As the water is used in the shower or bathtub, new water enters the hydraulic lock, maintaining the liquid level.
Hydraulic seals are an important component in the drainage system in bathrooms and showers, helping to maintain hygienic and comfortable conditions, preventing odors from the sewer system and ensuring safe water removal.
