At what height to install handrails for bathrooms
To date, the issue of equipping bathrooms and bathrooms for low-mobility groups of the population is open. Handrails for people with limited mobility are structures that are specially designed for people who find it difficult to move, get up, bend over, take a shower without assistance.
Such groups of people include:
- Elderly persons (60 years and older)
- Temporarily disabled (after surgery, etc.)
- Pregnant women on late lines
- People with baby strollers
- Preschool children
- People with heavy luggage, carts
When arranging bathrooms, bathrooms, apartments, wards, sanatoriums, questions often arise about the choice of handrails and the height of their installation. In this article, I will tell you what kind of handrail, at what height it is better to install, and why.
There are two types of handrails:Stationary - these include:
- straight, angular, L-shaped, L-shaped, under the washbasin.Stationary handrails are fixed.
Often, the installation of such products is chosen for spacious bathrooms, because they should not interfere with the free movement of a person around the room, especially if a person is in a wheelchair. Such handrails are convenient and safe for manual gripping.
- Folding - these include all handrails that have folding mechanisms. They are considered an ideal solution for small-sized premises.
Often the place of their installation is near the plumbing.
Let's move on to the installation:Straight handrails are placed horizontally at a height of 80-90 cm.
- They are mounted near the washbasins, near the bathroom, so that a person can get up or sit down. Such handrails are produced in length from 20 to 60 cm. For installation in corners, angular internal handrails are used, this is especially true in showers.
If you need to install a stationary handrail near the toilet, then L-shaped ones will be an excellent option. They are for floor and wall mounting at the same time. Such handrails can be equipped with a swivel leg.
There are also special handrails for installation under the washbasin. They are attached both to the floor and to the wall for reliable fixation. They are needed so that a person can wash, brush his teeth without assistance, but at the same time "with support". For people in a wheelchair, such handrails help to rise.
Folding handrails are: wall and floor type. Both types are installed near the toilet, often on both sides of it. The optimal height for mounting a wall handrail is 70-80 cm. At the same time, if the handrail is mounted near the wall, the distance to it should be at least 4-6 cm.
I recommend choosing handrails with a pipe diameter of 32 mm, it will be convenient for an adult to hold on to them. Handrails are attached only to the load-bearing wall. If, for example, a folding handrail is needed near the toilet, but the wall, for example, is plasterboard, then a folding handrail with floor mounting is used. Such a handrail is similar in design to a "turnstile".
If there is a barrier-free shower, a folding bathing seat is installed. This facilitates the adoption of water procedures. It is mounted at a height of 55-60 cm . It is recommended to install a straight handrail nearby for lifting from a sitting position.
