Shower channel installation: installation steps
Today we will talk about "How to install a shower channel yourself?", how to do it step by step. We will figure out the technology of arranging the drain by installing a shower channel and find out what building materials we will need. After that, you will be able to independently equip a barrier-free shower area in an apartment, cottage or private bath. Let's move on to the details.
The entire installation consists of 9 stages
- Stage 1 — raise the floor level
To install the ladder in the floor, it will have to be "lifted". If we are talking about a private house or a sauna, then this will not be a problem. You can still design the pipe wiring at the initial stages and achieve the desired screed height. In an apartment, this is not so easy, because the height of even the most compact tray is at least 6 cm. But you also need to make the slope of the floor towards the drain product. Therefore, the floor needs to be "raised" above the level of the capital layer. But at the same time, you should not "load" the overlap. This should be done in stages and deliberately.
- Stage 2 — tools and materials
The materials that we will need: shower channel, sewer pipes, screed ingredients (water, sand, cement, plasticizer, fiber), styrofoam plates, damper tape, sealant, mastic, tiles or mosaics, tile adhesive.
The tools that we will need: a level, a container for mixing cement sand mortar, a pencil, a tile cutter, beacons for filling the floor.
!!! Hint. The calculation of the amount of material should be done depending on the area of the room. After that, you need to make an estimate with a list and quantity.
- Stage 3 — selection of a drain device (shower ladder)
I have specifically highlighted this as a separate item, as it is very important. And it's not just about the well-chosen design and length of the product. But also about its configuration. This is the kind of thing that you should not save money on, because it is located in the body of the screed and it is not so easy to replace it. When choosing a product, consider the installation location, throughput, and shutter. After all, if you make a mistake in choosing, you risk inhaling "aromas" from the sewer or standing bone-deep in water when taking a shower.
- Stage 4 — drain assembly
If we are talking about a new building, then work begins with the creation of an outlet from the sewer riser. The drain pipe of the ladder will be attached to it. This should be done as low as possible, since the pipe should have a slope from the ladder to the riser. For proper installation, as well as rapid water flow into the system, the floor slope level of 2-3 cm per 1 linear meter must be observed. The holes at the insertion point are filled with sealant for reliable sealing.
If the installation will be carried out in an already operated shower room, then it is necessary to dismantle the old coating. This should be done all the way to the concrete base. After that, remove all the debris and dust. The old drain system needs to be updated by installing new plastic pipes.
!!! Hint. Before you do all this, you need to decide where the shower tray will be located. In this case, the distance from the tray to the wall should be a multiple of the number of tiles (also take into account the seams 2-3 mm). This will help to avoid cutting the tiles, and it will also look aesthetically more beautiful.
- Stage 5 — insulation of the base
In order to raise the height of the floor, but not to make the screed heavier, but even to insulate, extruded polystyrene or styrofoam is used. Regardless of which of these materials you choose, the density should be at least 35kg/m3. The thickness of the insulation should be 30-50mm. The insulation is laid out along the perimeter of the shower area.
- Stage 6 — filling of the finishing screed
After that, the insulation is filled with cement-sand mortar (we form a floor screed). For strength and fluidity, fiber and plasticizer can be added to the solution. And a damping tape is rolled out along the perimeter of the shower area, it serves as a compensation layer for linear expansion of the screed. Or if it just protects the screed from cracking. When filling, you need to use pre-prepared beacons, they will help to make the necessary slope to the shower tray. After pouring, the screed is left to dry. Now the thermal insulation and the ramp body are inside it.
!!! Hint. If the tray is located near the wall or at the entrance to the shower area, the slope is made only towards the drain product. If the tray is located in the center of the shower, the slope is made from four sides.
- Stage 7 — waterproofing
After the screed has dried, the perimeter of the shower needs to be treated with a waterproofing compound. It is better to coat with a coating waterproofing for the bathroom, I recommend using a waterproofing membrane. Pay special attention to the corners and joints of the floor with the walls. After all, it is in these places that mold and mildew are most often formed. Also, with good waterproofing, you will never flood your neighbors.
- Stage 8 — laying tiles
After completing the waterproofing work, you can start laying tiles. The installation is done in the direction from the tray to the walls. I remind you that the height of the tile with an adhesive layer must correspond to the level of the shower tray grate. Often this layer is 1-1.5 cm. It is better to give preference to seamless tiles, and not slippery. You can also lay a mosaic.
- Stage 9 — laying the shower tray grate
After all the work has been done, and the glue residues on the tile seams have been wiped, we can proceed to the final stage. This is the laying of the ladder grating. This should be done after all the "dirty" work, so as not to stain or damage it.
!!! Hint. Manufacturers of shower ducts produce models with a grille that has height adjustment. It is better to buy such a model if you are not sure that you can mount everything level. The adjustment takes place due to the washers on the inside of the grille, they help to raise or lower the grille by a couple of millimeters, thereby saving the situation.
