Three types of tile adhesive: simple, standard, improved. How to choose the right one

The durability of the cladding, as well as its resistance to various loads and damage, will depend on how well the tile adhesive is chosen. Today we will consider the standard classification of tile adhesives and talk about their purpose.

Standards of adhesives for tilesModern materials for gluing ceramic tiles, as well as other facing materials can be divided into three groups: 

• simple
• standard
• improved

Each of these groups has its own marking: C0, C1 and C2, respectively. For the first time planning to do the facing work with their own hands, inexperienced craftsmen mistakenly believe that the best adhesives for tiles are compositions of category C2, at the same time compositions of C1 are of poor quality and short—lived. In fact, everything is somewhat different.

• C0Category C0, simple, is the cheapest and most common category of materials for gluing tiles.

Produced on a cement-based basis. This type is suitable for carrying out facing work on a flat, non-deformable base made of mineral materials. A small ceramic tile can be placed on the glue C0 indoors, provided that the air humidity is normal. 

This adhesive is not suitable for high-quality bathroom cladding, outdoor work, use in places with high humidity and temperature fluctuations, and is also not suitable for application on uneven planes. Often simple tile adhesives are used in the arrangement of a kitchen apron, as well as minor work in the kitchen and other dry rooms.

• C1 Category C01, standard adhesives, are designed for a wide variety of indoor and outdoor work, are suitable for rooms with high humidity, are resistant to negative ambient temperatures, as well as temperature jumps.

Such glue has sufficiently high adhesion rates, and also withstands high loads in difficult operating conditions. Also, this category of adhesives is used for laying medium-sized ceramics.

• C2Improved adhesive compositions are marked with the designation C02 and are intended for lining walls and floors indoors, as well as outdoors in case of intense pedestrian and automobile loads.

For the most part, such glue can withstand separation loads of at least 1 MPa, and is also suitable for laying large-sized tiles of 60x60 or more.
