Retainers for reinforcement – allow you to achieve maximum strength and reliability of the supporting frame, contribute to pouring the exact thickness of the protective concrete layer between the formwork panels and the reinforcement mesh. The clamps allow you to place the reinforcement at the right distance from the base and the walls of the formwork. The height of the clamps is selected based on 1/3 of the height of the protective layer.

The protective layer of concrete is the distance from the outer face of the reinforced concrete element to the nearest reinforcing bar. The thickness of the protective layer of concrete should be selected, taking into account the purpose of reinforcement in structures. The working or constructive role of the reinforcement is taken into account; the type of structure (for example, a column, slab, beam, foundation element or wall); the diameter and type of reinforcement. This is due to the fact that too thin a layer will not fully perform its functions, and too thick a layer will negatively affect the reinforced frame and lead to increased costs.

The parameters of the protective layer are clearly regulated by the norms:

• at standard or low humidity in the room, the thickness of the protective layer of concrete should not be less than 20 mm.
• at high humidity inside the structures, the thickness of concrete should be at least 25 mm.
• when constructing buildings whose reinforced concrete parts go out into the open atmosphere, the protective layer of concrete should be 30 – 40 mm.
• for floors up to 250 mm thick, the concrete layer should be at least 12 mm. This value varies depending on the diameter of the valve. For overlaps of greater thickness, the thickness of the formation increases by 5 mm;
• the part of the structure placed in the ground without the use of additional protection should be covered with a layer of concrete from 40 to 76 mm.
• for foundations, a layer thickness of at least 40 mm is provided.

The clamps are designed for fittings with a diameter of 8-16 millimeters. Typically, 5 to 10 fasteners per square meter are used. For reliable fixation of the reinforcement, it is recommended to use from 5 to 10 fasteners per square meter. The smaller the diameter of the armature, the more retainers are used.

For the horizontal arrangement of fittings in the construction of foundations, industrial floors, floor slabs, "flooring" fixators are used. It is important to take into account that the "flooring" fixators are used when installing concrete filler floors on crushed stone and non–solid or loose surfaces - sand, polystyrene, cotton wool. Also for installation on membranes and films due to the increased area of the base, which does not damage the surface.

The "universal" or "rack" retainer is used for the device of a horizontal protective layer on a solid base – concrete, plywood.
