Repair of concrete bridges: materials and tools

The reinforced concrete bridge structure is one of the most popular in the world because it has high strength, resistance to loads and durability. However, even such capital buildings are destroyed over time, as a result of which they lose strength and become relatively unsafe. In this article, we will look at the main repair mixes that are used to repair concrete bridges, and also talk about the necessary tools.

Reasons for the destruction of bridgesThe main causes of deformation and destruction of such structures are:

  • effects of water and moisture, the cycle of freezing and thawing of water in microcracks of concrete
  • carbonation of concrete structural parts
  • dynamic load from pedestrian and automobile traffic
  • natural disasters: fires, earthquakes, hurricanes
  • military actions with the use of lethal weapons.

Repair stages The repair of a reinforced concrete bridge also includes several stages, such as:

  • Review and diagnosis of damage. Experts carry out a visual inspection of the bridge, and also offer special technical means, such as vibragraphs to identify possible damage to concrete elements.
  • Determining the size and damage of the place. If damage is detected, it is necessary to determine its size in order to prepare for the next stage.
  • Preparation for repair. This stage includes cleaning and degreasing of repair sites, as well as surface preparation for applying repair compounds.
  • Repair directly with the help of special mixtures, if necessary with the use of sealant, as well as corrosion inhibitors for additional protection of the structure.
  • Protective coating: After the bridge surface is restored, a protective coating must be applied to prevent further damage.
  • Commissioning of the repaired bridge.

Mixtures for bridge repairCement-based repair mixes are used to repair relatively large damages, cracks, chips, as well as to strengthen the joints of the structure.

The Teknogrout 350 mixture (Teknogrout 350) has proven itself well — a one-component composition with high adhesion ≥ 2 N/mm2, compressive strength ≥ 60.0 N/mm2, bending strength ≥ 9.0 N/mm2.

The composition is put into operation after 24 hours from the moment of application and is suitable for application with a layer of 10-75 mm, which makes it possible to repair small and medium-sized damage with the help of Teknogrout 350. Such mixtures do not shrink, which is extremely important for structures with dynamic load, including bridges. Other materials and tools

To repair the bridge, you may also need:

  • Compressed air compressor, which is used to clean the surface before applying protective coatings.
  • Fittings for replacement in damaged areas.
  • Chemical reagents necessary for additional protection against surface destruction.
  • Mixtures to eliminate leaks, for example, a Teknoplug hydraulic seal.
  • Pneumatic jackhammer for removing damaged areas of concrete.
  • Concrete cutters.
  • Plotter for applying protective coatings to concrete.
  • Concrete grinding machine to meet the coating requirements.

Repair of bridges made of concrete is a painstaking process that requires strict adherence to technology and selection of the best materials. Otherwise, the structure will not only lose its durability, but may also pose a threat to the safety and lives of people.
